Oh, and here’s another question.
What are bad examples of asexuality in fanfiction that you’ve seen? Have you ever seen fic where the author clearly doesn’t understand how asexuality works or is working off of stereotypes? Where the author seems to have elitist views about asexuality? In my experience this can often be almost as annoying as erasure.
I’m going to be snarky here and say “the majority of Sherlock ace!fic.”
I’m just going to leave this here. It’s gotten to the point that when I go trawling for acefic on the AO3 I keep looking for ways to exclude Sherlock fandom completely, because there is so much seriously skeevy stuff in there.
Maybe I should do another of my privately grading fanfiction on how well they get asexuality sprees in that tag. Usually when I do it, I get a lot of stuff with varying levels of Not Getting it, maybe 10-20% stuff that clearly understand what asexuality is and how it works (with a variety of perspectives, but usually heavily skewed towards romantic indifferent aces), and maybe one fic in thirty or forty that actually says something about an asexual experience that I personally find interesting and worth coming back to. Haven’t done one in a long time, though, partly because I got busy (and less involved in reading fic) and partly because it got really depressing.
