The continuing saga of AVEN
AVENites seem to have concluded that a) complaints off of AVEN, about AVEN, are not valid. Given that b) AVENites apparently dismiss complaints made about AVEN on AVEN, and that c) some AVENites leave AVEN too upset and triggered to go back to the site to complain, this all seems like a pretty effective way to avoid having to make any changes.
Come with proof. If you have proof then it’s hard to render your argument invalid. Anybody can claim AVEN (or it’s forum users) have made a faux pas, but a lot of AVENites aren’t going to believe you because of your honest (type)face. If you’re going to have a picknick, bring the food and not just an empty hamper.
One of the very threads I linked to above was another set of complaints about AVEN, on AVEN. Given that that was disregarded, I’m not sure what kind of “proof” they would listen to.
When I gave up on the site two years ago, I did it after linking to three threads which showed that established moderation policy for the brand-spanking-new anti-bigotry addition to the TOS had not been enforced. I explained the particular clauses that were being ignored and questioned why moderators hadn’t gotten involved despite being required to read their forums every 24 hours and their own policy requiring them to intervene in these situations, and I noted that each linked post was well past that deadline. I did that as a well-established member of the site who had been active for several years.
I got the same kind of denial that there was a problem then that Aydan is talking about now. To top the icing on that particular cupcake of assery, I also got an “unofficial warning” from a moderator for making that post and publicly calling out the site’s management. Y’know, because coming right out and saying something is just as bad as repeatedly posting bigotry all over the site. I’ve not seen nor heard anything coming out of that site since I left it to indicate that anything has changed about the way the site is run or handled.
So golly gee whiz, handcuffs-and-cheese, what kind of proof d’you want here? Linking to actual examples of threads where this happens and the moderation doesn’t step in isn’t apparently enough. The entire I Can’t AVEN blog isn’t apparently enough. Comments from multiple people in another forum discussing why they won’t interact with AVEN, why they’ve given up on that community, aren’t apparently enough. What, exactly, is it going to take for AVEN to admit it has a problem?
