There was also the time an AP Biology teacher temporarily working with our lab fell over herself to not make myself and a coworker uncomfortable with her professed belief in evolution. Yeah, we tried not to laugh too hard at that one.
Actually, getting my labmates together long enough tends to result in Awkward Evolution Stories. I am one of the more fortunate ones in that the conservative religious background I come from is a Catholic one and therefore my relatives don’t have much problem with my work, but I know several people who cough and say “I’m a biologist” or otherwise are vague about what they actually do to their families in order to avoid unpleasantness. (Also people who are loud and ornery about what they do and consequently end up with constant fights about it with said families.) This may be part of the reason I have found so many cranky atheists in evolutionary biology: we get so much religiously-motivated crap about our field that eventually people go “oh, fuck this” and stop trying to be polite about it anymore.
